Do you need to store or reach things already stored in your attic or loft? Is there any access at all or is that which is installed impractical? Maybe you want to turn your loft or attic into a living space, or a secret hideaway. Whatever your desires are, you’ll need a loft ladder. If you don’t want to make one yourself, it’s time to think about what you do want out of your purchase. Keep in mind the cost, the amount of space it will take, and practicality of use.

When purchasing loft ladders, it’s important to make sure to do your homework so you can find the right fit for your home at the best possible cost. Also, consider the cost of labor and installation. Usually, the person or company who sells it can install it. Make sure that you take all necessary measurements before you buy. Also remember to ask which product is best likely to work with your space. There are many styles of these ladders to choose from to suit anyone’s needs.

The wooden loft ladder is a ladder that is quiet when being used, and adds a little bit of style to one’s home. Your aluminum loft ladder is smaller, and more practical than wood, but is a bit unsightly. This would be best for an attic in a hallway or a more inconspicuous area. A stationery ladder is convenient when you need to access an area regularly and you won’t have to fold or slide it away. It’s important to remember to secure this type of ladder in an area so that it doesn’t get into the way. A sliding or extended ladder is convenient when there is a small space. It can be stored away as if it weren’t even there, and then be used as needed. There is also the telescopic loft ladder, which is an adjustable ladder that is made for small spaces and my personal favorite, the electric loft ladder, and with the control of a button, you can access and store it.

When purchasing any of these ladders, remember that you want function as well as style to be considered. You don’t want to put an aluminum staircase right where guests can walk in and see it, and you don’t want a bulky stationery one in your hallway. What’s the bottom line? A loft ladder can allow access to a whole space you would never have otherwise used. For the right home, these ladders are definitely a necessity.

Loft ladders are practical and functional because of the unit’s ability to fold and it does not use much space. These ladders are best for houses or buildings that have attics or basements that are constantly accessed or used for storage. They are usually made of aluminum or wood. Steel or aluminum ladders tend to be cheaper compared to a wooden loft ladder. You should also consider that if you are using steel it can affect the temperature of the metal weather it will conduct heat like in the summer or coldness in winter. On average it can carry up to 100kg which includes your weight and the item that you will be carrying.

On the contrary, wood is widely used by many because when you use a wood loft ladder they are quieter compared with aluminum. But wooden loft ladders are likely to be pricey and for practical reasons, often times a loft ladder made of wood is better if you constantly need to access your loft. Otherwise a metal or aluminum loft ladder (which is cheaper) is appropriate if it is used once a month or less.

Types of loft ladders

There are different types of loft ladders and are available in wide range of prices. One popular and easy to use loft ladder is the sliding loft ladder which can be found in either three or two section models and is connected to the support in the loft. Another example would be the concertina ladder and the telescopic loft ladder which is usually an option for really limited or for lofts that has poor access. And the last example is the folding loft ladder. Derived from its name, it folds up into three sections and is commonly used in UK. Whether the loft ladder is intended for saving space or decoration, you must consider the proper installation of the unit. Please note that when installing a loft ladder it is important that it is properly set up otherwise you can always consult with your local carpenter or companies who are specializing with supply and installation.

DYI instructions for making a basic loft ladder

Here are some basic quick DIY loft ladder instructions. You will need a cutting tool, measuring tape, 6 inch lag bolts, lumber, two woodscrews/ deck screws, drill, screwdriver, varnish and sandpaper.

First, measure the height of the loft ladder from the upper story which is directly below the roof to the floor. Then add (12) twelve inches for the length of your ladder beams. Cut the 2-by-4 lumber into two pieces, this is for the ladder’s outside support. For the step of the ladder, divide the total length of your ladder by ten inches to find out how much is intended to be cut out for the rod or bar.

To determine the number of rungs (steps of the ladder), round off the number that was solved. Cut the rungs of 2-by-4 from your lumber into twenty four inch segment. Start assembling the loft ladder from the floor by attaching the rungs and placing it twelve inches apart. Screw each side of the rungs to the ladder beams with two 3-inch deck screws or wood screws.

Position the ladder adjacent to the loft to see if the loft ladder is accurate. Use two 6-inch lag bolts to screw the ladder to the wood. This can be easily achieved with a drill. There will be an extension just above the floor of the loft for the last part of the ladder; this is used as a safety handrail. Finally, decorate your ladder or simply use sandpaper to smooth down the wood’s surface and varnish the ladder for protection purposes. You will want to choose sandpaper that has a high grit size. The higher the grit size, the smoother it will make the wood. Typically, you will want P100 and up.

Obviously, if building a wooden loft ladder isn’t something that is within your comfort zone, you can always hire someone else to build a custom one for you that will fit your home perfectly. For both accessibility and great looks, these types of ladders are a wonderful addition to your home. You can always buy a loft ladder for a couple of hundred dollars as well.

Do you need a convenient way to get into your attic that you don’t have now? Is accessibility to your attic almost impossible or even unsafe? Then you will want a telescopic loft ladder. These ladders are a modern addition to the home and can actually add value to the home if you ever decide to sell.

One of the first things you will want to remember before investing in any of the variety of telescopic loft ladders is measurements. It is not as simple as going to the store and picking out a ladder that you like. The space you need the ladder to fit in will need to be measured for a proper fit. You need to measure both width and distance, from the opening of the attic to the bottom of your floor for the best measurements. You will also want to figure out what you want your ladder to be made from. Do you want an aluminum loft ladder or a wooden one? Most of the newer homes do have the aluminum ladders as they are more practical and last much longer than the wooden ones. Most of them are light weight, fold down nicely and are much easier to work with than wood.

Once you find the right size and material you are interested in, you can start shopping! Any home improvement store is a great place to start price comparisons for your loft ladder. Larger stores such as Lowe’s or True Value are perfect places to find exactly what you are looking for. The internet is also a great place to find loft ladders. The one thing to remember about the internet is that you can get special offers at some of the very home improvement stores that you would visit in person. You might even be able to print coupons to save a little extra money. Also, places like Craigslist or other advertising websites, might be a great place to get a deal. Be careful that you do not end up spending a lot of money on shipping to try to save a few bucks, as this might backfire.

No matter which type of ladder you are looking for, make sure that you check out weight limits. Some ladders are designed for a person to go in and out of the attic with light items. You have to make sure that you do not risk damage to your home or serious injury to yourself or others by cutting corners. It might be smart to reframe, if needed, and choose a ladder that holds three hundred pounds even if you never need that much capacity, rather than choose a ladder that’s only capable of holding two hundred pounds, and you go over the limit.

Having a telescopic loft ladder can make a big difference in any home. You can access and store your items with ease. The convenience this will offer you will be exactly what you need and expect from such an investment.

The trend to maximize spaces has made its presence for a long time now. Call it being wise but the practicality of this idea would surely benefit a lot of people. Renovating your attic to make it more useful is a good idea. Accessing it won’t be that hard as long as you have loft ladders.

A loft ladder offers a convenient and easy way of accessing high or hard-to-reach places in your house. In particular, households with attics would surely benefit with their use. They are functional items that you should consider investing in once you decide to turn your attic into a useful space. Having one will allow you convenient access to this commonly isolated room.

Although wooden loft ladders are the typical types that you see, do take the time to consider other loft ladder variants as well. Here are some of them:

Aluminum

Aluminum loft ladders are ideal for those looking for ladders that have modern feel in them. Their compact design makes them the perfect option for homeowners who want to retain the minimalist look of their interiors. The best part about these loft ladders is that they are reliable even if they have been in existence for such a long time. They do not tend to go weak easily even if they are frequently used.

Automated

Call on your modern and high-tech vibes with electric loft ladders. These types are generally operated by a remote control. They can easily be folded up or down whenever you need to. Of course, this kind of feature ensures that the ladder won’t take up too much space. For those who want to save on electricity, why not opt for an electric loft ladder that is powered by batteries. This guarantees that you can still use it even if there is unexpected power outage.

Timber

As classic as they look, timber loft ladders are still the option for a lot of people. Probably because of the fact that these loft ladders exude a natural appeal that is pretty hard to resist. It’s also good to note that these ladders have undergone a lot of innovations in the recent years. In fact, you will now find them as modern looking as their new counterparts. The only downside of having timber ladders is the special maintenance that they require.

It is good to know that a lot of home fixtures are now available in varying types. This gives you the comfort of picking the one that would best suit your needs. With the case of loft ladders, it is critical that you thoroughly assess and examine each type. It is the only way to ensure that you are making the right choice.
